Working Hard to Make it Happen

It’s so hard to believe that it’s been six years! Six years since I got a call from my manager, Michael Bruno, asking if I’d be willing to take a meeting with a guy who was starting a web series. I wasn’t working much at the time, and while I didn’t know much about the web series world, I thought “what the heck,” and went. Little did I know what adventure was in store!

Time Flies …

I realize more and more each day that what they say is true … as you get older time just zips by! I can’t believe this week marks our one year anniversary of launching PLANK. What an adventure it’s been! I spent some time this morning looking back over our posts from the past year, and boy did we cover a WIDE range of topics and ideas.  I have to say, 12 videos, 29 recipes, 52 posts, 294 images and 746 comments later, I’m so proud of this site – proud of how it looks and how unique it is, and proud that I think we achieved what we set out to do, which was to have something each week that would inspire you. A huge thanks goes to Mandy for making me appear literate, for getting a post up every week and for her graphics (they have been so fun and creative).

Sitting Down for a Chat

I’ve mentioned before that I love reading your comments, and I appreciate when you take the time to respond, share your own experiences and ask questions. Recently, a reader sent in an email full of great questions, so I decided to use them as an opportunity to sit down for another video blog. Thanks, Sandie Coco, for your great comments and questions … please keep them coming!

Grateful for My Full Plate

I should warn you … today’s blog is going to be all over the place … just like I’ve been for the past week, lol.

Between memorizing lines, working and helping my husband with a renovation project at his office, I’ve been stressed out and just plain bogged down. At times like this, my gut instinct is to say “let’s find something easy to do for the blog.” But then I realize that my life is probably like many of yours in that way, and this is one of the many reasons I started PLANK – to share and discuss this juggling act called life. And maybe, in doing so, we can help each other out.

The Unlikely Road to Entrepreneurship

Last week’s apple pie video got me thinking about the early days of my pie business and what an unlikely venture it was. If you would have asked me while I was growing up if I’d ever own a business, I would have laughed. Acting was all I wanted to do.

But, over the years, as my acting career has taken its many turns, I’ve considered opening all kinds of businesses – from decorating to restaurants to homemade ice cream. In 2005, after making an apple pie for more than 20 years, my husband dared me to start a mail order pie business. I remember my response so clearly, “what would I do if someone ordered one?” He replied that “it would be a good problem to have.” So I jumped in and took my pies from casual baking for friends and family to a real business. No, I didn’t have a business plan … wouldn’t even have known how to write one (and if I had, I might not have jumped in the way I did).

Sweet rewards … and wrangling the wrap

This past weekend was a whirlwind of activities – two Daytime Emmy evenings and two separate Best Show wins. After my outfit contemplations over the last month, my choices felt right! Friday evening’s girl tux was comfortable, fun and certainly different than the majority of other gals at the event. Sunday evening was the televised event and I wore a beautiful dress, but still had to wrestle “the wrap.” At some point I just had to ditch it, let the arms be out and just go with it! That moment aside, it was a great night!

All In …

Thank you all for the thoughtful comments you’ve shared here so far – I love reading your reactions and learning about how much we all have in common. I can relate to so many of the experiences you’ve shared, and one in particular strikes me today – the times in our life when we’re bored, idle or feeling a complete lack of motivation.

As I mentioned in my very first post, I am a product of a single mother who worked hard, but struggled financially. I have always been a worker bee, so I got a job when I was 14 (back when you could) so I could afford to buy the “extras.” I started working hard, or hustling as I like to think, to achieve goals I had laid out for myself; and I’ve never really stopped.
