Garden Update: A Video Tour of My Blossoming Vegetable Garden

It seems like just yesterday I was sharing with you my excitement over my new organic vegetable garden; but now, with several weeks passed, you won’t believe how much it’s already grown! From talking with the Gardenerd and plotting out how I’d use my space, to shopping for the perfect fountain and building the raised beds, this garden was certainly a big undertaking. But, boy was it worth the effort! It’s growing like crazy and I’m already harvesting the freshest, most delicious veggies!

Gardenerd BookFor those of you thinking about starting your first garden, or even those experienced gardeners who might want to take their gardens to the next level, I must again point you to the Gardenerd – her guidance, tips and book have been such a huge resource for me. Check them out!

I wish I could share some of my delicious tomatoes or kale with you (no seriously, I’ve got more kale than I know what to do with) – but instead, how about a little video tour of the garden?

  1. Mary Beth it was a delight viewing your garden..you have inspired me to get back into my garden and plant some herbs and veg..having a torn shoulder ligament has stopped me for over a year but now I must plod on into my garden 🙂

I love your garden Mary Beth! I’ve had my organic veggie garden for 7 years now and every year it’s a new wonder 🙂 I enjoy going out to my garden after a long day at work and eating cherry tomatoes right off the vine too. Drip irrigation has been such a help – so glad I installed it. Enjoy the fruits (and veggies) of your labor.

  3. Mary Beth,
Thanks for your garden tour. I am working on making an organic vegetable garden using the space in between my ornamental plants in a huge raised bed in my back yard. I appreciated the advice on the plants that keep bugs at bay (currently only use marigolds) as that is my battle here in my high desert environment. My question is: How do you keep your strawberries from the birds without an ugly cage on top? I grow beautiful, sweet berries and am lucky to steal one before the birds have their way with them.

I’m growing Roma tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and have a whole section of herbs. I’m hoping to harvest enough to have the kids come with me to deliver our extra to the local food bank….good value lesson from their teacher Mom.

It’s good to know I’m not the only one who eats my lunch right out of the garden…think I already have my bushel of dirt on board.

Your garden is so beautiful and I’m jealous of the citrus! Keep those video blogs coming…lots of fun to watch.

  4. It’s a beautiful garden! I totally agree it’s better than diamonds. The nasturtiums are so bright and pretty. They are what I think of as an old-fashioned flower like Zinnias and Bachelor Buttons and Hollyhocks; flowers that just about every home had in their yards back in the mid to late ’50’s, but you don’t see so much anymore.

    • Love the hints about growing tomatoes-when we tried last year I was disappointed in how ordinary they tasted. Following your hints I think we will try again. Thanks!
How much work is done in your garden each week (by you or the gardener!) to get it in that fantastic state?

      • Mary Beth

Thank you, Jane! It’s actually hardly any work at all. I used a planting mix, so I get very few weeds, and I just pinch things back a little now and then.

  5. Wonderful video of your garden. I couldn’t tell from the video the size of your garden but it looks huge. How large is it?? I use to have a very large garden until the deer ate it . But at least someone enjoyed it!

  6. Your garden looks great! Mine is overrun with grass and weeds. How do you keep that from happening to yours???

  7. Thank you for your garden tour. The variety of fruits & veggies that you grow is awesome. I was wondering if you had any favorite recipes using some of your home grown ingredients that you would want to vlog?
Love your blog & I look forward to it every week.

  8. Mary Beth, Thank you so much for the video of your vegetable garden, it reminds me of when I was a child. My grandma would say the same thing about eating dirt, so funny! I loved to pick everything and eat it immediately as well. I actually wrote a letter to her last week about all my childhood memories at her house including the garden to let her know I love and appreciate her. Your blogs have made me think about my family, friends and people I talk to everyday, so thank you!! P.S. I have watched Steve and Kayla since I was 12 can’t wait to see what’s in store for them!

  9. Wonderful video blog this week!…you have a fantastic garden! Everything looks so yummy! Like you, I am waiting for my tomatoes to come in…have a few green ones and am patiently waiting on them to turn red! As always Mary Beth thanks for sharing little pieces of your life with us fans!
