You Asked: Mary Beth Takes Your Questions

In my first post of the year, I asked you what you’d like to see featured on Plank this year. You sent in so many great suggestions and we’re excited to tackle some of those topics! Overwhelmingly, you said that you wanted “more video blogs.” I love the idea of getting others to join me in future video blogs, but for this first one, I wanted to respond to some of your questions.

Once again I asked for input and the response was HUGE – so many questions that I don’t think I got to everyone. But I did my best to respond to as many as possible.

Thank you all for your questions … and as always,  your continued support/readership/engagement here!

30 Plus Some & I’m Feeling Great!

In October, I shared with you my quest to get back on the health wagon with the Whole30. Since then, several of you have asked about my experience, so I thought I’d share a little update.

As I said in my original post, I’ve tried so many diets over the years that I’ve lost count. I seem to be perpetually in search of something that will help me stabilize my weight. And for that last 5-10 years, I’ve been in a pretty consistent cycle – I’d be really good during the week and drop a few pounds, only to gain them back over the weekend. Sound familiar?

Guilt-free, Cauliflower Pizza

Eating healthy doesn’t have to be boring … in fact, I love challenging myself to find new and interesting dishes that keep me on track, while also satisfying cravings. I am not a fan of cauliflower, but a couple months ago PLANK editor Mandy shared this great, guilt-free take on pizza that uses cauliflower. I gave it a shot and it was a hit!

Beautiful, Talented & Brave: Living with Anxiety & Depression

My beautiful friend Kate Mansi bravely shares her story to stop the stigma of depression

I remember the first day I met Kate Mansi, who would soon be my dear friend, when she joined our cast at Days of Our Lives. Truly such a vibrant, beautiful girl – inside and out.

Over the years together on the show, I have watched her grow so much as an actress and a young woman. Whenever her scenes came up on the monitor in the makeup room, I always made a point to turn up the volume, stop and watch, because I always knew they were going to be something extraordinary! She brings such depth, heart and soul to every scene.

Comfort Food: Healthy Sweet Potato Chili

What a week! Between the this crazy election season coming to a close and my hectic schedule in preparation for Sunday’s benefit performance, things have been a bit chaotic. So this week, I’m sharing a little comfort … in the form of comfort food!

Last month I shared with you my attempt at the Whole30. Well, 30 days have come and gone, but I feel so great I’m sticking with it. In addition to feeling good, the Whole30 has introduced me to so many fabulous recipes. One of my favorites is this Slow Cooker Sweet Potato Chili. It’s super easy to make and so yummy … oh and it’s pretty healthy too! I use ground turkey, but you can use beef. Give it a shot, and let me know what you think!

Katie’s Dental Humanitarian Outreach Program

As many of you know, I am a big supporter of several charities, including CASA of Los Angeles and One World Stage & Screen. I am so proud that the passion for giving back is something that my children share. My daugther, Katie, is extremely busy with dental school, but she finds time to give back – not only locally, but also in places throughout the world – through her participation in the Dental Humanitarian Outreach Program. The work this group does is amazing, and this week I asked her to share it with you.

Hi again! I am Mary Beth’s daughter, Katie, and I’m in my fourth year of dental school. For the past two years, I have been lucky to participate in my school’s Dental Humanitarian Outreach Program (DHOP), through which I had the opportunity to travel to the Philippines and Belize (see a video of last year’s trip) to provide free dental care to underserved communities.
