A Journey through Skincare

Recently, several people have commented about my skin, and asked about my skincare routine. While I have been lucky to have not had major skin issues, I do, like most women (and men), suffer from the occasional breakout. Add to that dry skin, and the issues that come with aging (I mean who would have thought I’d still be dealing with pimples when wrinkles started to appear?) and it’s become more and more important to me to take good care of my skin.

I’ve always been a firm believer in clean skin; and over the years, I’ve tried all kinds of cleansers and moisturizers – everything from drug store soap to expensive creams. Electric brushes and magic serums … I’ve tried those too. But I’ve only recently found a skincare regime that I think is really right for my skin. And the truth is, I didn’t find it on my own … I had the help of an excellent esthetician!

blog92_2I know I’ve said this before, but in my 30s I used to get facials on a regular basis. For some reason, however, as I’ve gotten older (and honestly need them more) I’ve not been as good about going. Even when my husband opened a medspa a few years ago, I didn’t go regularly. In the last year, however, as I’ve seen some of the amazing work they’ve done at his Skin Deep Laser Medspa, I’ve started going more frequently. I’ve tried basic facials, microdermabrasion and even the “vampire facial” (some of you may remember seeing the video of that). Those treatments, combined with some great advice for home care, have completely changed my skin!

I like to keep things simple, and I’m not someone who can keep up with some elaborate routine, so the staff at the medspa helped me find a regime that’s not only easy to maintain, but also is tailored to my skin’s particular issues. On a daily basis, I’m now using a gentle cleanser, a moisturizing serum and sunscreen (plus Aquaphor to remove my eye makeup). A couple times a week I will also do a gentle exfoliator. Then, I try to get a facial once every month or two. But, instead of just telling you about it, I decided to take you with me to see my esthetician, Michelle, so you can see and hear for yourself all that is out there to help with your skin, as well as how much a trained professional can help.

Whether you’re suffering from acne, rosacea or sun damage … or even if you’re just trying to hold back the clock a little … there is help! Many of the products Michelle and I discussed are likely available at your neighborhood medspa or dermatologist’s office, and I highly recommend getting your own personal consultation so you can determine what will work best for you. But, if you’re interested in something we shared, the amazing team at Skin Deep Laser Medspa would be happy to do a phone consultation, and they can ship most of the products!

And over the next few months, I’ll continue my journey through the medspa – sharing with you all the services that are available to help you feel beautiful, from the inside out! And if you have any specific questions or issues, let me know and I’ll see if I can find some answers for you!

Thanks for the reminder to book my facial! My good friend is an esthetician and has been on me to make an appointment, but I’ve not had time. Between work and 3 youngsters at home (5, 5, and 4), it’s hard to find the time to do these little things for ourselves. But I agree with making sure to take off the makeup or grime from the day before bedtime — even if it’s with a Costco facial wipe (when I’m super super lazy) — it makes a huge difference. And SLEEP. Not that I ever get enough, but I notice that on some nights when I get an extra hour or two, I look so much better in the morning and am confident enough to wear less makeup to work. Thanks for your blog!

This was so great. I got hooked on an md line on evine. Worked great for several months and I no longer see an improvement. It is time to look locally and if I cannot find a good spa I will definitely give a call to do a phone consult. My regime is too many different products (am and pm care) and complicated. I am 68 years old and want to feel good about my skin. Thank you to both you and Michelle for sharing.

Hi Marybeth, as a working mum of 3 young children (11,9 & 6) life as you know is crazy busy and after watching your blog I realised it has been a quite a while since I have had a facial. You are so right looking after your skin is so important and as summer is fast approaching and the sun is getting hotter here in Australia 🇦🇺 I really need to look after myself. So I have booked myself in and hopefully will make this a regular thing. I love watching/ reading your blogs. Thanks again Michelle 😘

  4. I saw you at an appearance many years ago and thought then that you had the most beautiful skin that I had ever seen on an adult! Granted, we’re both a little older, but you have maintained your beautiful skin! I like the idea of facials, but every time I’ve gotten one, I really breakout after. I’d like to find one that helps rather than hurts!

  5. Great Vlog about skincare. You have such beautiful skin. Thanks for sharing your routine. I learned a lot watching the video. I know I need to be more diligent about wearing sunblock.
Always look forward to your blog…Thanks Mary Beth

  6. Thanks for sharing and thanks for aging naturally/gracefully and not buying into the hollywood crap 🙂 You’re beautiful at all ages & stages. I suspect Skin Deep will be inundated with calls…
